In 1967 he had already promoted seven other tracks and the 500 lap race fell away. In 1971 he held the World 100 and offered a $4.000 prize to the winner. Bruce Gould won and the event is now considered to have been the birth of the modern type of racing we are used to today.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is named after its current sponsor. It was originally known as Strictly Stock Series and then became known as the Grant National Series. The champion is determined by a point system. Points are given according to where they finished and how many laps that they led.
