For any raw product to reach the consumer be it a good or a service, it has to undergo a sequence of steps involving people, organizations, resources and information exchange. These steps contribute directly to the quality and the impact of the good or service. At each step money changes hands, a reduction in the set price at any stage is known as a discount. In hotels we focus on the final stage where the consumer is the recipient and even here hotel discounts happen.

It is simply defined as an establishment that offers lodging, guest services and food commercially to its customers. According to the set standards for such an establishment to be legally considered as a hotel it should have at least six bedrooms and half of this should be en suit that is with private bathroom facilities. It should also have a restaurant where the occupants of these rooms can get food. And according to this you can see that it offers both goods and services.

A hotel may offer a discount to clear out of date and unwanted stock in their stores. Since hotels serve various kinds of food every day, they are forced to purchase the ingredients in bulk. Food in the store may go bad or expire and this would result to high losses. To curb this problem, a discount is imposed on certain foods. This will make the consumption of these types of food increase and therefore the supplies in the stores will be exhausted easily.

A hotel may offer a discount to launch a new product they have. This will make it more appealing to try out. While doing this they can collect important data about the product and learn how they can improve it. They can also learn if their customers are ready for the new product or not even before going all in.

In every business there are the major customers, this people either make high number of purchases or bring in more profits or they have been with the business since it started. This people are considered to be valuable to the business. In hotels the case is the same and there are discounts made specifically for this people as rewards for their loyalty.

One that just opened in a new area may offer discounts to lure customers this is a very common practice in this industry done by not only hotels but also new businesses. It takes advantage of the nature of human beings to go for the cheaper option in this case of a new business, the management decides what kind of discount shall be imposed and for what amount of time. They do this in the aim of getting customers in their new space.

When introducing a new management, a hotel might offer a price cut to their customers to mark this transition. It is a sign of good faith from the incoming management and they do this to give themselves a head start and gauge their ability to maintain customers.

During the holiday season the competition is usually very high. This results to different hotels offering different kinds of discounts in a bid to have a fraction of this market. This strategy is popular and hotels go to great lengths to advertise their discounts.
