Initially, it is wise for one to make a list of each item that is required, and practice using each object regularly. Those are unfamiliar with camping and outdoor life should consider buying a large camping kit designed to be stored in a backpack. More experienced outdoor enthusiasts can choose a smaller kit, such as a model made to be placed in a small area such as a tote bag or purse.

Packing items that will definitely be used and eliminating those that will simply occupy much needed space is wise. A knife, for instance, is obviously an essential object for survival kit. Each item one purchases should have a definite function with regard to providing shelter or assisting one to prepare food.

It is also essential to give thought to the size of the kit when purchasing the required items. When the package is complete, it should be one that can be easily carried and that contains only durable, quality gear and provisions. Cutting corners when choosing such items is never a wise course of action, as cheap equipment or tools will be of little help if a disaster strikes.

Regarding shelter, packing an easy-to-assemble tempt or small sheet of plastic is a good idea. Additionally, a poncho or survival blanket is also a wise choice of items to be placed in the kit. It is important to remember to dress properly as well, if outdoor survival is necessary during inclement weather.

Water is one of the most essential items one must have in an emergency survival ensemble. It should be stored in refillable plastic bottles, and a straining cloth or water purifier pump should also be purchased, as it may become necessary to find alternative sources of water if one's initial supply is used up. Tins in which water can be boiled are also good choice of items.

The majority of experts recommend adding a whistle to the aforementioned kits. Such an object can be used to locate one's family or friends if they become separated, or to signal for help. An LED flashlight can also be used as a signaling tool. As one would suspect, a traditional flashlight is certainly necessary as well.

Fishing equipment and trapping devices are also items that a person may wish to purchase when creating one of the aforementioned kits. One should gather strong fishing line, hooks, and even trip wire if it can be found. Of course, it is also in the best interest of all involved to pack nonperishable food items that can be prepared over an open fire.

A good supply of matches or several cigarette lighters are also important items. Consumers should consider adding fire starting sticks to the pack as well. Finally, one should invest in a first aid kit that includes Band-Aids, antiseptics, gauze, and possibly antibiotics are painkillers if they are available. Ultimately, any consumer who invests in emergency survival kits will be better prepared to face a natural disaster or man-made catastrophe.
