I don't gamble so I often get asked why I visit Las Vegas at least once a year. The answer? The free attractions make Las Vegas a frugal traveler's paradise (and we'll save the dining discussion for another article). Almost every casino has some sort of freebie gimmick to attract gamblers. In this article, I will cover, what I consider to be the must-see's to give tourists a flavor of Las Vegas.
The Fountain Show At Bellagio
BELLAGIO HOTEL - The FOUNTAINS AT THE BELLAGIO must be experienced to be believed with its complex water choreography that dances to classical and popular music and gorgeous when viewed with the Las Vegas horizon and the golden hotel as a backdrop. The whole family will appreciate this as a grand example of beautiful precision, engineering and technology serving art. This is the time the kids will keep to their seats song after song and water dance after water dance.
Since the Southern Nevada Zoological-Botanical Park is located in the desert, its primary goal is to inform people about desert life and the natural habitat, and to raise awareness about the protection of that habitat. It's not as kid-friendly as zoos with zebras, giraffes and elephants, but the chimps and wild cats do manage to entertain.
The GRAND CANYON - When the family wants to flex some muscles and stretch their legs a bit, they might want to venture farther away from the hotel to experience the grandest spectacle of all: The Grand Canyon. Massive, magnificent, great; words are not enough to describe its beauty and watching the sunrise and sunset there at least once in one's lifetime is definitely well worth the effort. Check out the Visitor's Center for ranger-guided activities, camp fires, fossil walks and full moon walks that the more adventurous nature-lovers can choose from. MANDALAY BAY Hotel - SHARK REEF AQUARIUM with the "Dive with Sharks" Program for the kids, offer a magnificent display of all sorts of sharks alongside with giant sting rays, green sea turtles, saw fishes, piranhas, jelly fishes and even a rare golden crocodile set in a 22-foot deep shipwreck exhibit. Admission for kids 5-12 years of age is USD 12. Below this age is free.
Outside there is the Botanical Cactus Garden with over 350 kinds of cacti, succulents from the local area and around the world (also free admission).
Note: There is an Ethel M's at the airport if you are concerned about chocolate melting (check hours of operation as every time I go, its closed).
There are many, many other free attractions in Las Vegas. Attractions that are changed often to ensure the city remains fresh, exciting and a frugal traveler's paradise.
