This year's Asia-Pacific boat show season, which traditionally runs from March to May, although a few important events are held in October-November, is the most controversial yet. Is Hainan or Shanghai the best place to sell into the merging China market, or somewhere else, like Nancha near Hong Kong or Xiamen?

And what is going on in Singapore, 21-year incumbent Boat Asia and upstart Singapore Yacht Show are being held over the same late April dates? Phuket Boat Show in Thailand began proceedings, but a heat wave made walking the docks a real challenge.

The Yacht Havan, principal marina for superyachts in Phuket, handled more than 50 regional and international big boats during the six-month high season ending in April, long-time marina managers Nick Wyatt and Zara Tremlett told Invictis. "And yet we still had to turn a few away", said Wyatt. "We have freed up some speace with the new 100' berths, but more urgently needed, so there are plans to extend pontoons out from the SE corner.

Down under, Sanctuary Cove Boat Show in May is now surrounded by large satellite events run by big boat brokers Grant Torrens and Sovereign Islands, Geoff Lovett at Marina Mirage, and tenants of the across-river Gold Coast Marine Precinct.

An anvil sun and temperatures in the mid 30's tested exibitors and visitors alike at the 10th Phuket Boat Show in Thailand, opening the Asian season, which nowadays sees myriad events mostly clustered in March-April an October-November.

Informa, organizers of Monaco Yacht show, ran Phuket in recent years, but a parting of the ways with their Andy Treadwell has seen it revert to the original owner, Phuket-based British expat Andy Downden.

Treadwell, also associated with the three Abu Dhabi Yacht Shows that tried unsuccessfully to challenge established Dubai Boat Show in the Middle East, is focusing his latest efforts on the fledging Singapore Yacht Show, whose earlier edition was billed "Asia's First Super Yacht Show", at One 15 Marina. This event has been scheduled over the same 18-21 April weekend as Singapore's incumbent 20+ years show, Boat Asia, at nearby Marina at Keppel Bay, thus ensuring a costly clash.

Both Treadwell and Boat Asia's Herman Ho "did the rounds" at the Phuket boat show. The Thia expo, confusingly known as PIMEX, was held at Royal Phuket Marina, an had one row of Princess and Sunseeker yachts bookended by a small display from Phuket's biggest broker lee Marine, which is located next-door in the Boat Lagoon, and Guild Craft, with a Majesty and two outboard fishing boats.
