Great Interesting Facts About Nelson Mandela

In history of African presidents, Mandela is known to be the only president who took the shortest term of presidency office by resigning when he felt there was need for someone else to take over the leadership. It is also a fact that he was one among those African presidents who took a large portion of his life in prison. There are numerous interesting facts that surround the life of Nelson Mandela.

Mandela won numerous awards and honors during his life span. He was an honorary citizen of Canada, an honorary member of Manchester United and honorary member of British Labour Party. There are also numerous places that were identified after Mandela such as an orchid (Paravanda Nelson Mandela), nuclear particle (the Mandela particle) and a prehistoric woodpecker (the Aistralopicus nelsonmandelai).

While studying in the Fort Hare, Mandela was expelled after he was discovered to have participated a student protest. However, Mandela completed his degree in Unisa University few years later. He also joined the Wits University where he pursued his law degree.

When serving his term in prison, Mandela is known to have been housed in a 2M by 2.5M cell. This room is considered to have contained nothing more than a bucket for sanitation and bedroll on the floor. As part of his imprisonment, Mandela was consigned to hard tasks such as working on a lime quarry. He was also only permitted to one letter and visitor after each six months.

Even though the apartheid government proposed to release Mandela for about six times while he was still serving his term he always resisted their offer. He always rejected their offers by mentioning that he favored his freedom more but also cared more for their freedom. He always accompanied this by saying that, he did not see any need of them releasing him while the ANC was still banned.

His birthday was the only date in history which United Nations dedicated as a celebration. The UN is known to have declared his birthday which is on July 18 as an international day. This means he was the first and the only person in history to have a name dedicated for celebration.

When he was being searched for his attempt to change South Africa, his tricks were as well known to be very amazing facts. Mandela is known to have pretended to be a chef boy, garden boy, chauffeur and watchman. He also faked his name to David Motsamayi when he wanted to run off to England and other Africa countries.

Through the life of Mandela he has had various quite interesting facts. Above are some of the main facts known about Mandela most of which revolve around his life during and before he was a president in South Africa. To add to all these interesting facts about Mandela, he is known to have made lots of efforts to ensure he changed South Africa from what it was during that time to a better state where its residents could live peacefully and with all their rights protected by the constitution.
