There are quite a few good reasons to go north of British Columbia and spend your vacation. One of the many destinations you can go to is the island archipelago of Haida Gwaii. This article covers some possible ways for you to take advantage of Haida Gwaii adventure tours and travel packages.

Since the area is an archipelago, or rather a group of islands, there is plenty to be had if one is thinking of activities relating to water. This area is well known primarily for the great experience of watching whales up close the whole year round.

Being in the most strategic area for whale watching, one will be able to see different species of whales up close. Depending on the season for month, one can see humpbacks, killer whales and gray whales. It is best to research this further or ask around from the locals the best schedules to see certain specific species for your tours and enjoyment.

Land activities also can be had in the islands. There are plenty of opportunities to go hiking and camping as well. Coupled with kayaking and plenty of fishing, one can enjoy land activities just as well. It is not uncommon to see many go hiking and biking in the morning and spend the rest of the afternoon lounging around on the beach and relaxing until evening comes upon the islands.

If learning about the local culture and habits of the Haida people is more your cup of tea, then there are things you can enjoy as well. The local people would be more than glad to share with you their local customs and traditions. It would to your overall cultural experience also if you can do some cultural research beforehand so your questions given to the locals can be more interesting and facts based rather than something that was just pulled out of the blue somewhere.

Quite a few totem poles are erected on the islands in groups. They are actually carved historical records of each of the families that have lived on the islands. A well travelled tourist will find very similar designs on the totems as those found in totems near and around the Alaskan regions. This is because the Haida are a very prolific people and are also found in those places.

It will take almost four days to completely immerse yourself in the local culture and history if one wants to visit every single community in the archipelago. Some communities have a local museum one can visit and most have local arts and crafts stores one can browse through. Here you can also see the origin of the bent wood techniques that they have created and perfected and is a mainstay in most Indian cultures in North America.

Should you wish to visit this hidden getaway, it is just a two hour flight from Toronto. One can also get to this place by boat or ferry if one decides to take the more scenic route. Either way the journey is very much worth it. Many travel agents now offer this experience for most to enjoy. Just be aware of the peak and off peak seasons so that you will be able to get the best deals that will not hurt your pocket.
