Spain might not be the first destination that springs to mind when looking at your skateboard with wanderlust in your eyes, but in recent years the resort of Palma de Mallorca has become a favourite with skaters looking for a bit of sun. Majorca hotels are often best placed for city breaks and a bit of a beach holiday, but the area also has some well-appointed skate parks all near the centre of the city.
The "Son Caliu Bowl" does exactly what it says on the tin. It's a huge bowl, ranging from 1.9m to 2.5m high. It's located just outside the city of centre on the Autovia de Poniente, so it's really easy to get to. It also provides the perfect space to perfect new tricks specialised for bowl and quarterpipes. Hotels in Spain tend to be more frequently visited by sun-seekers, but attitudes are shifting, and the area's becoming popular with young thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies. Many hotels are taking this into account, and will be happy to accommodate both you and your BMX, skateboard or blades - provided you don't ride them down the hotel corridors, of course.
The "Es Generador" skatepark is tucked into the centre of Mallorca town; it's a compact park boasting a 1.5 meter square bowl with slight hip and 0.5 meter extension. There's also a Hubba, steep quarters and steep flat banks, making it a versatile place to try out some new moves under the Spanish sun. "Sa Riera" is a new skatepark built on the outskirts of the most residential area of Palma de Mallorca, underneath a motorway flyover. Adding to the urban stylings of the place, it's made entirely of concrete, and already hosts a wealth of interesting street art and graffiti.
In the centre of Majorca you'll find the "Es Generador" skatepark, a small yet impressively well-equipped park with a 1.5 meter square bowl, a Hubba, steep quarterpipes and steep flat banks making it a versatile place to try out some new tricks whether you're a skater or a BMX rider. Likewise, "Sa Riera" is a wonderland of interesting obstacles. Built from concrete under a motorway flyover, it's got a large res area with substantial banks and ledges for grinding on, plus a good hip and wall ride. Under the motorway bridge is a bowl and non-vert spine, which may not be ideal for BMX riders, but is perfect for more proficient skaters.
Whatever your ride - be it BMX, rollerblades, or a skateboard, Mallorca and the rest of Spain offers plenty to keep you busy. There's no shortage of excellent skateparks and urban assault courses for you to test your skills on and perfect your craft. Plus, on your days off you can head to the beach and relax with a cocktail in your hand as you enjoy the stunning views of the famous Mallorca coastline. How great is that?
