A great travel tip that's often overlooked is to pack toilet paper with you when you're going on a road trip. You never know how far the next rest stop will be or if someone in your group needs to use the bathroom right away. It never hurts to be prepared.

Travel insurance can help protect you from losses due to lost baggage, stolen purses or wallets, and other problems that can be involved in travel. This type of insurance also covers illness or accidents while abroad or traveling.

Plan in advance if you will be traveling overnight. Many international destinations have very long flights. You will want to bring a few things such as a pillow and a small blanket. Sometimes airlines have them available but this is not always the case. Better to look after your own comfort.

When traveling internationally, an internet phone service on your laptop or smartphone. International calls using a cellular network can cost in excess of $3 a minute. Internet calls can only be placed from places where you have Wi-Fi access, but they will cost you only a couple of pennies a minute.

Find out about national holidays. Before you schedule your international travel, check a calendar to see if there are any holidays during your stay abroad and what that means in terms of business and restaurant closings. It may affect what is open or available to do. You may find you have plenty or options or, it could be a day of rest for the locals - meaning a day wasted for you - leaving you with nothing to do.

When traveling, it is usually a good idea to pack your belongings the day before. This way, you can avoid the last-minute stress that causes you to rush out the door with half of your necessary items still left in the house. Save yourself some stress and pack beforehand.

Look for coupons online for things you may want to do during your trip. You can get restaurant coupons for free meals when you purchase one meal or discounts on attractions, etc. This proves very helpful when traveling with your whole family and vacations can be very expensive to plan.

Tips like the above can help everyone travel smarter, from the most world-weary traveler to the fresh-faced new traveler setting out on his or her first adventure.
