Annual Vacations Should Include Holidays In Madeira

When searching for vacation ideas, give some though about holidays in Madeira. Located in Portugal, Madeira is a cluster of islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The archipelago was discovered around 1419 by Portuguese explorers lead by Infante Dom Henrique or Henry the Navigator. There were no native inhabitants at this time, so Portuguese farmers settled there, along with many others.

For Madeira, Portugal; the language of the people is Portuguese, but the islanders may also speak English. Learning basic phrases before visiting the island helps.

A harbor for vacationers and commercial business alike, Funchal is the capital of Madeira. Visitors by boat will land here. Those that fly in by airplane will land at the airport closest to Funchal.

Madeira is famous for its handcrafted art and embroidery, so a shopping trip is not complete without purchasing a few key items to take back home. Its wine is known around the world, and having firsthand access is a privilege.

Volcanic activity is what the Madeira Islands were created from millions of years ago. The volcanoes left tunnels and caves, which can be explored for those craving some history. Other locations to visit in Madeira are the Levadas, a system of aqueducts used to make sure water reach drier, more isolated areas. A visit to the museum, the Madeira Story Centre, will teach about the history of the island, while one can enjoy its food and shop for souvenirs. Remember to take in the view of beautiful beaches with clear waters and the botanical garden.

Travelers there for the New Year have to participate in the grandest fireworks show in the world. If visiting in June, there are celebrations that honor at least three saints, Sao Joao, Santo Antonio, and Sao Pedro. With holidays in Madeira being available year-round, and with it having an historic past, it may not matter what time of the year a holiday occurs. Everyone will find something they enjoy.
