Travel by airplane can be potentially nightmarish. Plane tickets are ridiculously expensive. Packing can be an extreme hassle when you have to deal with airport regulations. You are in a tiny seat for a long period of time with a potentially annoying person sitting next to you (I myself had to sit for eighteen hours from Los Angeles to Brisbane with a young child next to me). But for me, the most annoying aspect of air travel would be getting through airport security.
As a New Yorker, I remember 9/11 more vividly more than many others. I also don't have to remind people that after that tragedy, security at airports have become much more scrutinizing. Airport rules have become more specific on baggage measurements and size of liquid containers and what kinds of liquids or gels you can have. If you were to go through security during peak hours (6:30-9:30 AM and 3:30-7:30 PM) it could take potentially hours.
There is light at the end of that tunnel though. There are actually simple tips you can follow in order to decrease the amount of time you spend in security. The first would be to try and avoid peak hours where everyone is going to be. Less people equal small lines. Dressing appropriately (slip-on shoes and avoiding metal buckles and buttons) helps as well. Familiarizing yourself with air travel regulations (knowing what you can and can't carry on board) is also a major benefit at cutting time.
Another major time savor would be purchasing a security bypass card. If you travel much on the highway, you may be familiar with the EZ-Pass, which is a similar concept. A security bypass card allows access to special lines at certain airports to make getting to the security checkpoint quicker. Combine this card with the quick tips we discussed can get you through security as quick as a cheetah!
Getting through airport security is difficult and it is not going to get any easier. However, with the proper knowledge of airport regulations, performing simple tasks prior to arriving at the security gate and maybe even purchasing a bypass card would help decrease the amount of time at an airport and decrease your stress. So pack smart and have a good flight!
