If you have an adventurous spirit, you may want to think about visiting a country that has increasing appeal for like-minded travelers. Mongolia is becoming a top destination for those with a taste for something different. If this sounds like the type of destination for you, there are many different Mongolian tours that you may want to consider.

Mongolia has the world's lowest population density. This means that you can enjoy what it has to offer without being overrun by crowds of people. And it has a lot to offer, including the Gobi Desert, alpine lakes, nomadic herders and Buddhist temples.

The most popular types of tour in Mongolia are those focusing on adventure, wildlife or culture. They often combine these different elements. You can book an existing tour or ask your tour operator to design an itinerary just for you.

Lovers of adventure and the great outdoors can enjoy anything from overland jeep or motorcycle tours to fly-fishing. The Gobi Steppe and grasslands in the east offer good hiking if this is what you like more. Here you will most probably be able to see one of the largest populations of gazelle in the world.

You may opt to head for the mountains too. Here you can go kayaking or whitewater rafting on one of the many mountain rivers. Otherwise you can go mountain-biking, camping or hiking. Mountaineers may consider climbing the Altai Tavan Bogd, or the Five Holy Peaks of Altai.

Mongolia also has beautiful lakes like the Uvs Nuur Lake. This is one of the country's three world heritage sites. However, the country is probably most often associated with the Gobi Desert, which covers most of the southern part. If your interests lie in paleontology, you will love the Gobi's fossils and dinosaur eggs. Another attraction of the Gobi is its population of two-humped Bactrian camels.

Tourists also go to Mongolia for its horses, both wild and domesticated. The wild horses of Mongolia are called takhi and are a very rare equine species. For domesticated horses, you will do well to go on a trek on horseback. This will give you an insight into the life of the nomadic horse breeders of the countryside. They may even invite you to try airag, known in English as fermented mare's milk.

Other nomadic herders in Mongolia include camel herders and reindeer herders. Tours to visit these people are possible too. However, you will need to keep in mind responsible tourism since these nomads are trying very hard to preserve their culture.

For culture of a different type, the country offers many Buddhist monasteries and temples, some centuries old. You will also find some in the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar. Furthermore, this city is home to the Bodh Khan's Winter Palace, while its museums will help you find out more about Genghis khan and other historical figures. With so many different Mongolian tours on offer, the hardest part of your holiday will be to choose what to see.
