Ankur Gupta could not understand why it was imperative that he buy medical insurance for his 4-week stay in the US as an international exchange student. His dad, especially, had searched every possible web site and consulted whoever he had known to have travelled to the US, to find the right insurance plan for his son.

He had his answer eventually. One morning in the US, he woke up with a massive nose bleed and had to be rushed to the intensive care unit. That's when the Study USA Insurance plan he had purchased showed him what it meant to be covered-his stay at the intensive care unit would cost $500 a day, but he had to pay none of it, thanks to the plan.

A medical insurance plan for non-US citizens studying in the US, Study USA Health Insurance covers costs for medical emergencies, evacuations, and repatriation of mortal remains. US citizens studying abroad can also avail of this plan. A medical expense limit of either $250,000 or $300,000 can be purchased with this plan.

The plan can cover only persons possessing a valid US study visa, who are below 65 years. Like most insurance plans, the premiums for this plan are linked to the age of the person being insured and vary from $45 to $349 a month. For an additional premium, the cover can be extended to the insured person's spouse and children, respectively.

The insured person can choose to have continuous insurance to ensure coverage of conditions that first appear while the person is insured. Medical expenses covered by the insurance plan include medical diagnostic costs, surgery costs, charges for professional services, charges for recommended physiotherapy, and charges for treatment of injury to sound natural teeth.

In addition, a $300 cover is available for each day of hospital stay and $500 per day paid for ICU charges. Upgrade to the Study USA Preferred Health Insurance plan ensures coverage without per-day sub-limits. The plan also pays for costs related to pregnancy if conception occurs after the plan effective date. Cover for pre-existing conditions is available after six months of continuous coverage.

Besides medical expenses related to hospital stay, the plan provides a $500,000 medical evacuation cover and $100,000 repatriation cover. Expenses for outpatient surgery up to $250-a-day and prescription drugs are also payable by the insurer. The plan covers part of the expenses for treatment of mental disorders and substance abuse. The limit for accidental death or dismemberment benefit is $5,000.

The exclusions of the Study USA Insurance plan include purchase of eyeglasses, contact lenses, and hearing aids. The expense for treatment of injury sustained due to participation in riots is not within the purview of this plan. Similarly, congenital condition treatment is also not included in the plan.
