For those who believe that an exciting vacation is beyond their means an Anchorage hostel might just be the ticket to adventure. Until recently these low-cost accommodations have been student traveler's secret to seeing the world. Now that the secret is out more people are considering this option and these guidelines will offer some insight into choosing the hostel experience to fit their needs.

Cost is probably the number one reason people will choose to stay at a hostel. Expect to pay anywhere from twenty dollars to fifty dollars per night. Price is usually a reflection of the type of rooms available but one would be hard pressed to find better nightly rates at the more mainstream options.

It is very important to determine the type of bedrooms that are offered. Dormitory style are most common and may be single sex or coed. Some hostels do offer private rooms so if this is an issue be sure to ask in advance and expect to pay a little more for the privilege. Bedding can be optional but is generally provided upon request.

Private bathrooms are rare so be prepared to share with fellow travelers. The ratio of guests to restrooms is often the best measure of convenience and cleanliness so get the numbers ahead of time. It is also prudent to ask who is responsible for keeping the bathrooms clean although staff usually performs these duties.

Communal kitchens are standard features but far from equal. The best are fully equipped and stocked with a variety of herbs and spices but most do provide the basic cooking necessities. Many hostels now include breakfast (as well as all day coffee and tea) in the price of a night's stay.

Amenities are the little extras that turn an average stay into a great stay. The little things that mean a lot. Cable televisions and lockers are the very basics to be expected. Most offer more including but not limited to laundry rooms, lock boxes, and local maps. A bonus to straying off the beaten path is that most places offer free internet access for guests. Virtually unheard of in more expensive options this is a gift for the traveler on any budget.

It may seem obvious but location is everything. For example, public transportation is paramount for those who require it. Look for access to buses and subways with stops that include exciting local attractions. Eateries and shopping are more convenient if they are within walking distance. A safe neighborhood should be a priority.

Do not assume that everyone in the hospitality business is hospitable or that a hostel is staffed around the clock. A friendly face in a far off place can make or break an adventure. Absolutely call and speak to the people in charge at lengths. Ask about rules, housekeeping, check-in times and after hours entry as some facilities employ a curfew. The voice on the other end of the phone should be warm and inviting and the information provided should be helpful.

Travel is possible in a soft economy if one is willing to consider an alternative such as an Anchorage hostel. When the wanderlust strikes hop on board a plane or a train try something new. After all, vacations are about trying new things. Use these guidelines wisely and enjoy the ride!
