After Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester, Stansted is the 4th busiest airport in Britain. As with all airports, Stansted's operations began with the opening of its first terminal building in 1969. Today's terminal, however, did not start operating until 1988. When the current building was finally ready in 1991, Stansted Airport was considered an ultra modern airport complex.

Lord Foster was the airport's architect. The main structure is said to resemble a flying swan. Apart from the aesthetics, Stansted Airport was designed for passenger convenience from the ground up. For example, the passenger goes through the entire process on the same level. From the car park, he or she proceeds unobstructed to the check-in area, security and finally the departure gate on the ground level.

the airport has one major passenger terminal with three different passenger satellites used mainly by departing travelers. The airport provides quality services to its clients and users. They range from airport parking facilities to smoking areas and meeting rooms. Other services and facilities available at Stansted airport include rest and relaxation facilities, shops, meeting rooms, worship centers and many others.

There are plenty of up-to-date facilities at Stansted such as lost property area, left baggage area, information desk, currency exchange facilities and ATM machines, showers, postal facilities and many others. Some of the most cherished of these are parking facilities. These are conveniently provided to all passengers who wish to drive to the airport, park and travel. There are different parking services including valet parking, premium parking services as well as a couple of others.

When it comes to traveling by air to and from Ireland, the Spanish destinations of Alicante and Malaga, and Rome, many people give Stansted Airport their vote for efficiency and peace of mind. Many UK locals can attest that it is the best way to reach Edinburgh, Belfast and Glasgow by air. On a larger scale, Stansted serves 32 countries, over one hundred and fifty destinations and 14 airlines.

Stansted has the usual selection of shopping outlets, restaurants and other outlets, including a branch of the famous London toy shop, Hamley's, and thedreaded Starbucks. Facilities here are what you would expect at a major international airport, including designated smoking areas, Internet access, showers and facilities for pets. Stansted also offers special assistance and help and facilities for families travelling to or through the airport.
