One of the most significant cities during the Mayan civilization is Yaxha. This city is a part of the Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo National Park. The well preserved forest and the Yaxha lagoon are its pride. The lagoon is considered to be Maya Biosphere's most important water systems.

The True Beauty Of The Yaxha Archaeological Site

The archaeological site of Yaxha is the third largest, following El Mirador and Tikal. It is composed of more than 500 ancient structures including 40 stalae, 9 temple pyramids, 13 altars, 2 ball courts and a series of causeways or scabe'ob that connect the central, north as well as east acropolis. Visitors can climb the 9 pyramids as they are safe and the wooden stairs are strongly constructed. Being on the top of the partially restored Temple 216 will give you a breathtaking view of the rest of the pyramids, the jungles and lakes. Moreover, you can hear the sound of birds and Howler monkeys.

The freshly restored North Acropolis which is bordered by 3 temples, The Maler Group that features a twin temple and the unnamed well known astronomical observation structure which can be found between Plaza F and Structure 116 are the other interesting attractions.

An Ideal Bird Watching Destination

This ancient Mayan city serves as a wonderful destination for nature lovers, bird watchers and those who are interested in archaeology. It is one of the main ancient Mayan civilizations and was rediscovered in 1904 through continuous excavation. Located in the southeast part of the Tikal National Park, it is also a part of the National Park of Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo. A tropical rainforest which is abundant with Neotropical varieties of plant life encloses the Yaxha lagoon which is magically carved in limestone.

This birding destination offers more wonderful bird watching experiences as there is less human traffic and there are a lot of exotic bird species. Flocks of beautiful White-crowned parrot, Red-lored parrot, and White-fronted parrot can be seen at the observatory pyramid. The lagoon also offers a great place to see a lot of birds especially the rare Jabiru especially if you go there during the Nearctic shorebirds' migration season. The lagoon can be inviting but swimming is not allowed due to the presence of crocodiles.

The lagoon is also a great place to see a lot of birds such as the rare Jabiru especially if you are there during the migration season of the Nearctic shorebirds. However, swimming is not allowed in the lagoon as there are a lot of crocodiles. Crane Hawk, Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher, Pale-billed Woodpecker, Bat Falcon, Slaty-tailed trogon, Short-billed Pigeon, Killed-billed Toucan, Brown-hooded Parrot, Plain Chachalaca, Blue Bunting, Tawny-crowned Greenlet and Brown Jay are the other bird species that can be seen in the forest of Yaxha.

This is definitely the best site to go bird watching as it is less crowded and the best bird watching tours are offered here.
