Vancouver International Airport

Canada's second busiest airport, Vancouver International Airport, also known as YVR, is located 30 minutes outside the city. 119 cities worldwide are served by it. It was ranked the top airport in North America in the 2010 and 2011 Skytrax survey. Every month, more than one million travellers pass through the second-busiest airport in Canada: Vancouver International Airport. Some are residents getting away, others are visiting for business, or for a vacation in our beautiful city. Those laying over at YVR miss the city sights.

Scheduled coach transfers, limousine, taxi, car rentals and transit are some of the options to go between YVR and downtown Vancouver.

There's nothing worse than being bored and uncomfortable if you have a long delay or a few hours to kill between flights. But when it comes to keeping yourself entertained, YVR is really not a bad place to be stuck. Vancouver International Airport's interior has a local theme, featuring one of the most extensive collections of Pacific Northwest Coast Native art in the world, and blues and greens to reflect the colours of the land, sea and sky. The airport uses a great deal of carpet and vast expanses of glass to let in large amounts of natural light. The International arrivals hall, a large area where customs and immigration procedures are completed, is one of the most noticeable places for an arriving passenger. Before the arrivals platform, a large waterfall passes beneath the escalators that passengers arrive on.

One of the airport's most impressive features has to be the 114,000 litre aquarium in the main atrium of the international terminal. This marine exhibit is the main attraction for most new visitors, and is part of YVR's partnership with the Vancouver Aquarium.

If you are traveling to or returning to the United States, you go through US Customs at Vancouver Airport rather than when you arrive in the United States. This makes it like being on any other domestic US flight when you arrive at your US destination. This can add a bit of time, so you need to take this into account when planning your arrival time at the airport. This also means you must purchase any duty free before passing through US immigration. Upon your arrival in the US, it is unlikely you will be able to buy duty free. The duty free store is right on the way to US immigration.

If you're travelling with kids, check out the airfield at the Public Observation Area. You can find the Public Observation Area in the Domestic Terminal; it is a great place to relax, watch a busy airfield in action, and have a coffee. The space features floor-to-ceiling windows, free telescopes, information panels, interactive kiosks, and an interactive map of the terminal, runways and surrounding areas.
